NAFI's Pinchot Gardens Residential Community is a pregnancy and addiction recovery program that annually serves about 200 indigent and low-income women and their children. NAFI's Continuum of Care includes: Residential services; Recovery programs; Counseling; Childcare; Day and outpatient programs; Referral services; Support groups; Medical, nutritional; psychological and behavioral therapy; Classes; and programs geared toward a more healthy and self-sufficient life.

ImagePrograms include individualized treatment and supportive services directed at improving a woman's ability to live sober. Comprehensive treatment plans target a variety of interrelated areas that facilitate adaptation to a chemical-free lifestyle and the ability to become an active member of the larger community.

Pinchot's population includes women, age 18 or older. Priority is given to women who are pregnant and/or parenting small children. A nursery is provided for infants and small children who live with their mothers while they recover from substance abuse. We offer programs for family reunification, remediation and parenting skills.

The Community is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Site Services include childcare, laundry, family-style dining, a protective environment for women and children and safe, sober, and affordable housing.
Program Services include counseling, mental health referrals, wellness and medical services and case management.

ImageSupportive Services include housing referrals, independent living skills, legal assistance and educational programs. NAFI volunteers provide ongoing assistance to residents, including childcare, clothing, holiday gifts, arts and crafts and transportation.

NAFI provides women with referrals to off-site supportive services, such as screening, pre-admission assessment and psychiatric/medication services, substance abuse treatment, psychiatric and psychological treatment, case management, 12-step and self-help meetings, group therapy, medical services, job search and preparation, aftercare, pregnancy and addiction programs, community referrals, counseling and housing assistance.

Recovery Services

Residents at Pinchot Gardens have completed substance abuse detoxification prior to being referred to NAFI. Individual recovery efforts continue through a broad scope of services:

  1. Morning addiction/recovery groups
  2. Daily general meeting groups
  3. Daily wrap-up groups
  4. Evening recovery/relapse groups
  5. Weekly small process groups
  6. In-house recovery groups
  7. Support groups for former residents
  8. Spiritual groups
  9. Nursery/childcare services

Weekly individual counseling sessions are scheduled for at least one hour and family counseling sessions are held every Sunday.

Childcare

Nurturing children and ensuring that they have a safe, loving environment in which to live and play is a major priority of the Pinchot Gardens Residential Community. Our nursery houses a kitchen for preparing nutritious snacks, age appropriate sleeping and play rooms, a fenced in outdoor play area, offices, storage, several bathrooms, toys, books, clothes, counseling and lots of love.

Statistics show one million drug- or alchohol-exposed children are born each year. Among Maricopa County women who use alchohol and drugs, about one-half are in the child-bearing ages of 15-44.

Housing Services

ImageSuccessful transition to independent living and long-term financial self-sufficiency is a major focus of NAFI's programs. Women and children are housed in one of the group residence buildings. After treatment and other services, clients may qualify for a "rent scholarship" to help them live on their own in one of several leased apartments throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Eligibility prospects include women, with children, in recovery and participating in employment training, enrolled in school, or employed and saving toward economic independence. In addition, personal and household budgeting and financial literacy counseling and classes are provided to women receiving family housing scholarships and those currently living with their children in temporary housing, while recovering from substance abuse.

In addition to being low-income, the populations served by NAFI have "disabilities"- social, physical and mental- that make it difficult for them to obtain safe, sanitary housing at prices they can afford. Also, the availability of affordable, supportive housing is minimal, particularly for this group.
